What makes our heroes sexy?

MARIE HIGGINS IS IN THE BLUE ROSE WRITING ROOM TODAY! 2
Although this should seem like an easy question for most of us, I really had a hard time wrapping my mind around an answer. After all…I write ‘clean’ romances – no sex scenes at all, and even the sexual tension between hero & heroine is tame.

Growing up, I thought boys were sexy because they wore tight jeans or were extremely good looking. Then when I started reading romances, I admit, I read romances that had tasteful sex scenes in the story, and I figured that was what made heroes sexy. Boy, was I wrong!
Lately, I’ve had a lot of readers tell me how sexy my heroes are. When I read comments like that, I laugh…because I wonder how my hero can be sexy when he keeps his clothes on and his mind-set isn’t always in the gutter or wanting to undress the woman. So really…how can my heroes be sexy? Really?

The other day, I decided to send this question out to my Wattpad readers (an online library). I received a few great responses, and I decided to pick a paragraph out of my newest story, “Waiting For You” to see if these readers knew what they were talking about. So I’ll post their response, and then a snippet from my book.

CONFIDENCE is the key to it all, men who possess this can do anything (good or bad) also all people want to be looked after deep down even if it’s not what we want at the time. And please don’t forget that we want the bad boy that can only be tamed by the one and only. People who strive to complete their own destiny with their own rules without hurting others make you want to be like them and or follow them. Plus the ability right the wrongs. I think?  ~~ (sent by @allyopp)

“Have faith in yourself, Abby,” Nick said softly. “You’re an intelligent woman. You’re going to know the right thing to do when the time comes.”

His finger slowly caressed her cheek. The warmth on her skin made her body tingle, and she couldn’t help but close her eyes and snuggle against his touch. Soon he adjusted his touch, and his palm cradled her face. Holding her breath, she relished the softness of his touch. Deep inside her mind, a thought snuck in. Would he kiss her? Excitement built inside her chest and the foreign feeling surprised her. Why would she want a stranger to kiss her?

What makes your heroes sexy is the way you describe them and the humour in their dialogue! some of the heroes in your stories make want to swoon lol I feel as if I’m watching a film in my head not reading a book!! ~~ (sent by @broncos275)
Nodding, he pulled at his collar again. Was he panicked or just nervous? She wished she could ease his mind in some way. Being afraid of her wasn’t a good thing at this point. She must earn his trust.
He returned his gaze to her mouth. “I think it’s cute the way you suck on your bottom lip. It makes me want to nibble on it, too.”
Her heart leapt to her throat. What a bold—and improper—thing to say! So why did she like it so much? And why did her head fill with images of his lips on hers… “You are talking nonsense, Mr. Marshal.” Her voice quivered. She tapped her fingernail on the desk. The longer he stared at her lips, the faster her finger tapped. She nibbled on her lips again.
“I think I know a way for you to prove you’re not a figment of my imagination,” he said.
She stilled her hand and inhaled slowly. “Indeed? How?”
“By…um…well, you can suck on your lip to make it a raspberry color, so perhaps you could do the same to me?”
Blood rushed to her cheeks and she thought her face would ignite into flames—a feeling she hadn’t experienced since she’d died. Her heartbeat danced an unsteady rhythm, hammering like a runaway train. Yet, the idea wasn’t that far-fetched.
His eyes twinkled as if improper thoughts swam in his head, also. Indeed, he was a rogue of the first order.
“You…you want me to…suck on your lip?”
Nick pushed away from his desk and stood. She rose with him until they were face to face. He pulled the shirt collar away from his neck again, exposing more skin. Oh heavens!
“As much as the thought of kissing you sounds enjoyable,” he said, “I was thinking about something entirely different.” He pointed to his neck and chuckled. “Go for it, honey. Give me a hickey. This ought to be interesting.”

Really, it’s just all about the attitude. With the right personality/attitude, Elmer Fudd could be sexy. ~~ (sent by @Londie365)

Nick clenched his jaw as he swept his gaze around the room. His head was pounding again. “Miss Carlisle? You can come out now.”
“I’m right behind you.”
He spun around. True to her word, she stood by the window, looking just as real as Mr. Moore had, especially when he rushed out of the office only moments ago. A confident grin stretched across her face.
“I’m assuming you believe I’m a ghost now?” she asked in a low voice.
He nodded. “I do.”
“You don’t believe you are still dreaming…or that you’re loony?”
“Not when Mr. Moore saw the same thing.” Nick released a gush of air in a heavy sigh and sat on his chair, then rolled it closer to the desk.
He really didn’t want to believe her, especially since he’d never believed in ghosts. Sure, I’ll indulge my delusional mind, and then call my psychiatrist friend in the morning.

The way they treat their women makes them sexy. Their passion and commitment. Heroic men are sexy. You don’t need sex to prove you’re sexy. It’s all about the attitude and how they carry themselves – confident but not proud. ~~ sent by @ceraiah

She sat first, and he followed. His fingers flew across the keys and a different screen popped up. Even as fascinating as the computer was to Abigail, she still couldn’t keep from gazing at Nick’s face. His jaw was square, his nose straight. Dark brown eyebrows framed his eyes, and his lashes were quite thick for a man’s.

Nick didn’t say a word. No sound emanated from the room except for the soft clicking of the keyboard, much quieter than the clanking of a typewriter in Abigail’s day. She hoped he couldn’t hear her uneven heartbeat over his rapid tapping on the keys.
When he stopped and turned toward her, she sucked in a quick breath, surprised at being caught gawking, but she didn’t back away. The tenderness in his eyes told her he wasn’t upset. In fact, the way his gaze roamed over her face led her to believe he wanted to study her as much as she’d been studying him.
He grinned. “Do you know how hard it is to concentrate when a beautiful woman is sitting next to you, checking you out?”

Heat surrounded her shoulders like a comforting blanket, and she breathed in Nick’s musky masculine scent. She glanced down at his arms, wrapping around her from behind, so she leaned against him on the seat and looked back at the house. Her chest burst with so much joy, she could hardly contain herself. It had been so long since she’d experienced these feelings. Slowly, her body was coming awake like after sleeping for a very long time.
“Are you all right?” The soft whisper of his breath tickled her ear.

For me it’s the way you describe them and when I read it I think god he must be totally sexy. ~~ sent by @bluecream

Earlier that day at the cemetery, though, something else had preoccupied her mind—the man who had introduced himself as Mr. Marshal. She hadn’t met him before, but for some reason, he seemed vaguely familiar. She’d felt that way even before he’d said he knew her grandmother.
Abigail swept the long mass of hair off her shoulder and sat on her bed. Her heart had been crushed when she’d learned her grandmother couldn’t come to the funeral. The old woman was in bed, ill with a terrible cough. Abigail had told her to stay home and take care of herself. Now she needed to pay her grandmother a visit so she could ask about Mr. Marshal.
He was certainly a sight to behold, especially since he wore such strange-looking clothes. Abigail had never seen anything like them. And why wasn’t he wearing a hat? All gentlemen wore hats! But it was his intoxicating, deep green eyes that had her mesmerized. She couldn’t stop staring into them. Mr. Marshal was quite attractive if she dare admit, but what surprised her was how kind he was, offering to assist her with anything she needed.
Here are a few others who had given overall comments:

I love reading in the males POV- it reinforces how I see them – as caring, loving people, rather than the aloof, cold people they can come across in women’s POV.. Does that even make sense? Also, descriptive text will always be good, what they look like, how they dress, and also how they conduct themselves. Just every little thing, it all paints a big picture and that makes them sexy! I could be reading a story about abstract art, but I’d fall in love if it were presented with passion. ~~sent by @JessicaMcKenzie6

They’re sexy because they are confident men who fight for what they believe in, it’s not about him saving her it’s how he goes through with it. You make them think and feel how a real person would insecure but still confident. ~~ sent by @vampireacademy60

Maybe that is where their imagination brought them when they read your story. I would like to quote Stephen King for this: “Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” ~~ sent by @justbreathesofie
He can be heroic, adventurous, daring. And he can save, rescue a woman if he needs to. Or, be equal to the female character as well. It’s up to you to think what works or not. ~~ sent by @RobertHelliger
