Triple Falls

Week four of my hikes around Oregon took me to Triple Falls Trail, just east of Multnomah Falls.  The lower trail is quite easily trekked, though there is a fairly steep incline which gradually lessons to a comfortable level. The entire hike, to and from our ultimate destination, Triple Falls, is just under four miles. 

I’ve never seen the need for trekking poles or hiking boots before, but after traversing the latter part of the  trail a

scending to the falls, I am rethinking that. the more rugged and steeper trails (in this case, big rocks that do a number on your ankles) would be easier to walk with more supportive footwear and the poles would be helpful in keeping my balance. I slipped several times, and trekking poles might have prevented that. I saw a couple of brave souls wearing flip-flops. I’m curious to know how their poor feet fared. 

I’ve found that the earlier I arrive at my hiking destination, the greater chance there is that I’ll have the paths to myself.  Without exception, my daughter and I have encountered way more people just starting their hikes as we are returning from ours.   

We climbed down to the creek and sat on some flat stones to eat our lunch, just above where you see the triple falls. 

 

 

There are no restrooms in the parking area or on the trail, though if you follow another trail to a campground over a mile away, there are restrooms available.

One final note, when you complete the loop, you finish on the Old Columbia River Highway and have to 1/2 mile back to the parking area.  An extra-wide shoulder is provided most of the way, but a great deal of that is filled with parked cars. 

I’ve found these weekly hikes have been good for my writing. I mull over plot points and formulate where I want to go next in my story. At times, I feel a bit anxious to get back to my writing room, but what’s waiting there for me to do, will still be there after my time in the outdoors.
