Why You Should Fall Back in Time with Historical Romance…Specifically, Regency

Last fall was the inaugural year for the Historical Romance Network’s Fall Back in Time Event. Authors, readers, and bloggers alike posted the reasons they fell for historical romance. In preparation for this year’s event, I’ve compiled a list of reasons why anyone and everyone should fall back in time with historical romance.
- Historical romance is full of, you guessed it, HISTORY! Why scour the internet for historical information yourself when a romance author has already done it for you? HR authors pepper their books with bits and pieces of historically accurate (for the most part) details to help readers gain a better sense for the period in which they’re reading about. Part of the fun of reading historical romance is learning more about the times in which they books are written.
- No internet…heck, no anything! Yet another reason I’m such a fan of the genre! Readers are invited to explore a time before we became dependent on technology and people had no choice but to communicate on a more personal level. Information moved at a much slower pace and instead of being able to “wiki” an ending for a book, people had to actually read the entire thing to find out what happened. Routes of communication were more limited than they are now and people often had to resort to talking (gasp!) to other people. When a gentleman came to call, he actually visited instead of just sending a text with a string of emojiis attached to it.
- Escape! Historical romance provides an alternate reality where just about anything can happen. Tired of wearing the same tired jeans and old college tee? Escape into a historical romance novel where you can wear anything from a grand Georgian gown, pannier included, to a Downton Abbey dinner dress.
- The heroes. Show me the historical romance novel where the hero doesn’t make you swoon! Call me old fashioned, but I love to read about a time when chivalry was more than, “I saw you were almost on E, so I put some gas in your car for you.”
- Because you love LOVE! Love is love – no matter when it happens. At the very minimum, it involves two individuals sharing a very deep, emotional bond. And it’s always been that way. No matter what era, the basic fundamentals are the same. And if you’re a romantic, then what’s there not to like?

Oh I agree that there is something different about historcal romance you can’t find elsewhere. I think that part of it was the rules that you had to follow outwardly, made the stolen moments that much more exciting, unlike today where everything is so blatant and in your face. And you are right, Jessica, learning of the history back then is interesting. Even in America, they had much of the same ideas of what was acceptable. People dressed better overall and cared a lot more about manners, which is definitely a lost art today, unfortunately! Of course, romance fared a lot better, as well. It still does exist, but not like it did then, and let’s not forget chivalry, which has been all but forgotten today. Yes, historical romances are definitely a must read for me! 🙂
