Today’s trivia is about footwear for men during the Regency period…actually about boots. Two types of boots were widely popular, Hessians and Wellingtons.
The Duke of Wellington |
Hessians |
Hessians originated first, and Wellingtons (named after Arther Wesley, The Duke of Wellington, who designed them) came along a bit later.
One of the main differences between the two, was the decorative tassel that adorned the Hessian and, Hessians were designed to be worn with knee breeches, while Wellington’s better served the newer fashions of men’s pantaloons and trousers. Both were used for military wear.
Wellingtons |
Wellington’s are what today’s rubber boots are fashioned after, and I read somewhere, were the original models for cowboy boots.
You’ll have to check the authenticity of that tidbit yourself!
