Any regular reader of Regency Romances will no doubt have come across character taking a pinch of snuff.
Snuff? What in the world is snuff? Quite simply, ground tobacco, generally inhaled through the nostrils. And, yes, it made them sneeze!
Often, gentleman (and frequently ladies too) had custom blends of the finely ground tobacco, (scented with floral, menthol or something else) and and they carried the stuff in a small container or snuff box. As you can see from the images on this page, the snuff boxes ranged from nearly plain to exceptionally ornate, and from quite small to larger decorative boxes.
Snuff consumption during the Regency Era was no longer as popular as it had been for previous generations, though a good many of the haut ton indulged.
Highly addictive, I find it ironic that at one time, snuff usage (actually, all tobacco usage) was considered to enhance the health. Gads, if they only knew!
I don’t have any characters taking pinches of snuff in my Castle Brides Series, my novella, Bride of Falcon, or the first two books in The Highlander Heather Romancing A Scot Series.
I do have a character I plan on introducing who will have that habit. He’s not going to be a very pleasant fellow, though.
This site contains scads of Regency snuff box images. Take a peek.
