ROMANCE WRITERS' WEEKLY-WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY WRITING NEEDS HELP? | COLLETTE CAMERON

This week’s questions are courtesy of Ronnie Allen!

Leslie Hatchel started us out this week. I hope you stopped in there first. I met her at RWA 2014. She’s the sweetest, friendliest little gal!

Okay, let’s get to it.

ROMANCE WRITERS' WEEKLY-WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY WRITING NEEDS HELP? 2
1.When do you decide that you’ve done enough editing and changes now  would make the manuscript different, not better, so it’s time to submit?

This made me chuckle, because even with my books that are out in print, I see things I’d like to change.
I guess the answer, at least for me, is to create the most polished manuscript I can while staying true to the story I created. I’ve refused some changes my editor suggested because they would have altered my story too drastically. Other suggestions I’ve accepted, because they enhanced the book.

2. When and how do you accept change advice given by rejection letters and critique partners?

This is one of those areas that I believe is very personal to each author.  You really have to have a strong grip on who you are and what your voice is. It’s great to take advice, and sometimes you do need to change parts of your manuscript, but other times. I firmly believe, you need to stay true to your writing.

I don’t know how may times I’ve heard other authors say their critique partners hated a book that ended up doing fabulously. And we’ve all heard stories about authors whose work was rejected, sometimes over-and-over, and they went on to sell tons of books.

The flip side of this is knowing when to take advice, because there is an area that truly needs refining. I thing the key is if you see a pattern in rejection letters, critique partner and beta reader comments, even reviews, then there may be something you need to pay attention to.

3. When you’re not writing, how do you spend your day, or do you create your day around your writing?

Well, I rarely get a day completely free of writing related obligations. Even on vacation I check my email, blog, and social  media.

I’m so busy with writing these days, I have to plan times not to write just to get other stuff done around the house and yard. And I have to schedule me time, which rarely happens, even though I have the best of intentions.

I have visions of my relaxing in the backyard reading . . .

Let’s head over to  Vicki Mixon and she what she has to say, shall we?
