Dear readers,

Pride and Prejudice Still Inspires
by Sally Orr
Since the day after Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, many authors since have written books with a similar plot. The plot has become one of the basic romance plots, boy falls for girl, boy gets ahead of himself and is rebuffed (serves him right), boy does a service for a girl, girl recognizes his merit and falls in love.
The book that inspired my debut: The Rake’s Handbook: Including Field Guide is Mrs. Gaskell’s 1855 novel, North and South, which has the same general plot.
One of my favorite books of Mary Balogh’s (Slightly Dangerous) has a version of that plot too. Many current romances use the same plot, although they may be a contemporary or paranormal.
Have you ever recognized this plot in a favorite book?
Blurb
The definitive guide to seduction…
The Rake’s Handbook was written on a dare, and soon took the ton by storm. Now its author, Ross Thornbury, is publicly reviled by the ladies—who are, of course, forbidden to read the handbook—but privately revered by the gentlemen. Unfortunately, Ross’s notoriety is working against him and he flees London painfully aware of the shortcomings of his own jaded heart.
Spirited young widow Elinor Colton lives next to Ross’s country estate. She’s appalled not only by his rakish reputation, but also by his progressive industrial plans. Elinor is sure she is immune to Ross’s seductive ways. But he keeps coming around…impressing her with his vision for England’s future and stunning her with his smiles.
How does one resist the man who wrote the manual on love?
Elinor hid a grin. “Do you remember the titles of the missing chapters?”
He readily answered. “Oh, there are so many depraved titles, but Method to handle the frolicsome, To rent unmentionables, along with Tie me up and fill my glass, were rather crudely torn from book. While What to do when there are two, Larks and sprees, and Something’s A-Miss, all remained. So I obtained a pretty good idea about the depraved book as a whole.”
She pursed her lips. “You have a good memory.”

About Sally
Sally Orr is a recovering scientist who worked for thirty years in academic research. One day a cyber-friend challenged her to write a novel. Since she is a hopeless Anglophile, it’s not surprising that her first book is a Regency romance. She lives with her husband in San Diego, surrounded by too many nonfiction books and not enough old English cars.
