Twenty-six Reviews for Highlander’s Hope In less Than 48 Hours.
Good or Bad?
Do reviews matter? How many reviews are enough, especially for a debut novel?
For a debut novelist with my first book released late on May 19th, I honestly don’t know.
My publisher wanted me to try to get 30 reviews on Amazon the first three days my book was out. That meant scramling to find ARC reviewers who could do a quick turnaround. (I didn’t get the ARC until May 4th.) I sent a total of 50 ARCS. Some reviewers were upfront with me and said they wouldn’t be able to finish by May 15th, my original release day. The book is over 430 pages. I wanted their input anyway.
Other reviewers, for one reason or another, were unable to finish the book and review it, at least as of today. I understand. Life is crazy busy and they were doing me a huge favor.
Yes, I do know some of the people who have posted reviews, but others are complete strangers; people who were referred to me because they do reviews. So far I have ten four-star ratings, and sixteen five-star ratings. Some of the reviews have been very detailed and added a bit of constructive
criticism. Others have been short and sweet. In the scope of review-land, are those rating really significant? Will anybody buy my book based on the reviews Highlander’s Hope has so far?
I hope so, but truthfully, I’m not so sure. My book is an obscure grain of sand in the vast desert of bookness. Maybe I’ll get the 30 reviews that qualifies me for Amazon’s special promotion. I need them by tomorrow, so I’m not holding my breath. I’m just grateful for the people that sacrficed their time to read and review my book. I have no idea what that promotion is.
Maybe balloons? A plane flying by with a banner?
I asked around at work today (I’m a teacher, and we teachers like to read) if my co-workers look at and consider reviews. They absolutely do. One said, she looked to see how many thousands of reviews there were for a book and how many 4 or 5 ratings the book had.
Holy crap on a cracker!
Thousands of reviews? I can’t imagine that . . . yet.
If you’ve a mind to, take a look at the reviews. Which ones would make you buy the book? Which ones wouldn’t?
