Regency Era humor was rather droll. I’ve posted some public domain images, that are really quite heinous. But, they do reveal something about the era.
Inexpressibles were men’s very form- fitting trousers. Little was left to the imagination, which was the intent. Women didn’t wear drawers/pantalettes until later in the century.

Why is a vine like a soldier? Because it is listed and trained, has ten-drills, and shoots.
Why is a sailor, when at sea, not a sailor? Because he’s a-board.
