What’s one thing you absolutely can’t tolerate during your writing? One thing you can’t write without?
I need quiet and a chunk of time. I really envy those friends of mine who can dash off a scene in a spare half hour, or edit for 20 minutes while the chicken is baking. I need 3-4 hour blocks and no interruptions! And I can’t write unless I’m in my office. HA, which is why I stay home a lot when I’ve got a deadline!
I write best in my office too! So, what’s the funniest thing anyone has ever said to you about your writing? Or the unkindest? Or the oddest?
One person said of my dialogue… “I wish it had been written more as we ‘speak’ than how we are ‘supposed to’ speak so it would have had more of a ‘real feel’ .” It struck me as funny, unkind and odd, all at once. I’m sure my 9th grade English teacher would not approve of this critics sentiments!
Place you absolutely want to visit before you die?
Ireland. My mother’s family is from that part of the world. And I love pubs. And tweeds. And long talks with slightly depressed people who have a great sense of humor! HA! Sounds just like all my mother’s relatives.
Is there any genre you won’t read? Write? Can you tell us why?
I can’t read horror of any kind. I used to. But once I had children, for some reason I just couldn’t handle victims…kidnapped women and snatched children and monsters just overwhelmed and filled me with fear. I do love mystery and suspense, however, and I used to write romantic suspense. But that even scared me. I’m not kidding. I so upset myself writing a scene one time that I went to bed and woke my husband up and asked him not to fall asleep until after I did. Being married to a writer is tough work!
I don’t read horror myself. How do you respond to negative reviews?
Hey, everyone has an opinion. And it’s valid. I do hate when a reader or blogger says they dislike something about my book, and then mis-state a fact about the plot. HA! When I first started writing, my first book was rejected as ‘having the majority of the plot set sixty years in the past. It needs to be a contemporary story for this line…” I wrote back and pointed out there were only about 3,000 words of a 85,000 word novel ‘set in the past’. I got rejected again. So my lesson learned is that when people don’t like something, let them be.  You really can’t please everyone, and you shouldn’t try.
So true! What’s one new thing you’d like to try?
French cooking. I’m a great, all-american kind of chef, pot roast and mashed potatoes, layer cake and great breakfasts. But boy would I love to make crepes, or a roast chicken that is crispy and tender.  It’s on my bucket list…me and hubby, Phil-the-fist, enrolled in a six week cooking class in the French countryside. HA! A girl can dream…

Oh, crepes…yummy. What are you most afraid of?
Not having enough time! I have a huge list of To Do’s that gets longer every day…I need another lifetime to do everything I want to! So I worry, and prioritize, and keep my eye on all the cyber-freezing stocks. HA!
Do you have a favorite quote?
I’m a huge Nora Ephron fan (and yes, I also feel bad about my neck – HA). She wrote… “Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” Great advice I haven’t always taken, but try to.
Okay, now for the quickie questions: Answer in three words or less. Ready? Go!
Favorite Disney Character? Donald Duck.
Favorite Fruit? Watermelon
Favorite Hero? Heathcliff. Sigh.
Favorite Eye Color? Brown
Best Vacation Destination? Paris!
Food you can’t stand? Liver.
What annoys you? Close-minded people.
Coffee, tea, or something else? English Breakfast tea!
Nightgown or Jammies? Nightgown
Prefer dogs or cats? Cats.  Nolo contendere.

Here’s the blurb for Secret Sister

EMELLE GAMBLE IS IN THE BLUE ROSE WRITING ROOM TODAY! 3
To their friends, Nick and Cathy Chance have the perfect marriage. High school sweethearts who’ve been together for ten years, they’ve weathered challenges and are as committed as they were when they first fell in love. Cathy trusts Nick, Nick’s world revolves around his wife, and the future looks golden.
To everyone who knows them, Cathy Chance and Roxanne Ruiz have a perfect friendship. They connected in grade school and since then have been each other’s confident and trusted advisor. Cathy loves the gorgeous Roxanne like a sister, Roxanne has fun-loving Cathy’s back in every situation, though lately there’s been tension between these two best friends…
And then, on a sunny summer morning, the unthinkable occurs, throwing into doubt the truth of what each of these people really know about themselves and one another.
Will Roxanne’s sacrifice be too little, and too late? Should Nick’s love for his wife be strong enough to risk trusting his heart more than logic? Can Cathy’s devotion to Nick give her enough strength to convince him to see her for who she really is?
Secret Sister proves how strong, how stubborn, and how trustworthy love can be as Nick and Cathy and Roxanne are challenged to overcome the secrets, the lies … and one extraordinary twist of fate that turns their lives upside down.

Excerpt

May I sit down, Nick?”
I nodded. Roxanne sat at the table in the kitchen. Despite her appearance, she seemed in control. I felt her eyes on me as I poured myself a glass of water.
The kitchen was a mess. For a second I was embarrassed by the dirty dishes, the soured milk on the counter. Then I got a grip. This wasn’t a social call and Roxanne wasn’t someone I was trying to impress. Every time she walked into the room, she did so with an agenda.
I turned around. “Do you want something to drink?”
She shook her head.
I sat across from her. She was pinching the back of her hand, like Cathy used to do.
“What’s going on? What do you want from me?” I sounded angrier than I thought I was.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re fooling around with your hands exactly like Cathy always did. You never had that habit. Why are you doing stuff like that?”
“What else am I doing?”
“You’re wearing your hair pulled back in a ribbon, and clothes like my wife wore.” I pointed at her blouse. “And you’re acting weird with the cat, like she’s your cat, among other things. It’s freaking my sister out.”
Roxanne fidgeted. “That’s ridiculous,” she said, but her face revealed I’d hit a nerve…

A bit about Emelle

EMELLE GAMBLE IS IN THE BLUE ROSE WRITING ROOM TODAY! 4
Emelle Gamble was a writer at an early age, bursting with the requisite childhood stories of introspection which evolved into bad teen poetry and took her first stab at full length fiction in an adult education writing class when her kids were in bed. As M.L. Gamble, she published several romantic suspense novels with Harlequin. She has contracted with Soul Mate Publishing for Secret Sister, summer of 2013, and Dating Cary Grant, an early 2014 release.
Always intrigued by the words ‘what if’, Emelle’s books feature an ordinary woman confronted with an extraordinary situation.  She most enjoys reading stories that surprise and amaze her, and hopes her readers will enjoy the challenging and exciting journeys her characters take.
Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C.  with her husband, Phil, her hero of thirty years,  and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. These girls, like all good villains, have their reasons for misbehaving. Her daughter, Olivia, and son, Allen, are happily launched on their own and contributing great things to society, their mother’s fondest wish.
