The Lady in Question
Hugh looked down at Miss Treadwell, who huddled into his mantle. The thin slippers on her feet offered no protection from the elements. Though she was but a few inches shorter than he, the cloak dragged the ground, becoming sopped with water and mud. She did not speak.
He wrapped the cloak more tightly around her. What role did she play in the game just past? Time to find out. “I think I should have a little sample of what I’ve just won,” he said, bending closer to her.
She scrambled backward, fetching up against the stone wall of Treadwell House. “What are you doing?”
“As I said, sweeting. Finding out what sort of bargain I’ve made.” He held her shoulders firmly and touched her lips with his own. She twisted her head aside, but he followed, capturing her again. She resisted for a long moment and then her lips softened and pressed back. He pulled her against his body, and tentatively flicked his tongue over her lips. She started but didn’t draw back. Desire flaring in him, he teased at the opening with his tongue. She gasped and pulled away from him, the mantle falling open, allowing a glimpse of her pale garments and paler skin.
Breathing harshly, Hugh stepped back. He watched her closely, damning himself for trying the experiment when it was too dark to see her features clearly. What was going on? Why had she seemed so cooperative inside, played the role of a woman who was sexually experienced when she clearly was an innocent? Fear of her father? He had not sensed fear in her before, and did not now. A desperate willingness to defend herself was more like it. He laughed. “This round’s to you, my sweet. But the contest isn’t over.”
