I’m so excited to be featured here at Bluestockings! Thank you for the invitation, Collette. I’m pretty much “an open book,” so feel free to ask me anything–about my books, my writing methods, my research trips, my rock star husband, or my many quirky careers.
LOL! Thanks for being a guest!
I was wondering, being you been in the business a while now, who was the one big influence on you becoming an author?
Uh-oh, I can’t see all of your question behind the picture! I think you’re asking me who inspired me to write? The first books I read that showed me the magic of reading were Howard Pyle’s “King Arthur” series and everything by Ray Bradbury and Edward Eager. My first romance novel was Kathleen Woodiwiss’s “The Wolf and the Dove.”
Hi Glynnis! Are you a plotter or a panster? Love your stories!!
I’m a little bit of both! I sketch out a basic plot, but my characters are always veering from it and putting in their own two cents.
How do you make a story come alive?
Interesting question, Billie! I have almost the opposite problem–my characters have a will of their own sometimes. I’ll have a character react a certain way, and they argue and say they wouldn’t do that. When the characters are real, the story comes alive.
Since your books are historical fiction, besides visiting Scotland, where do you get the information needed to make the book realistic for the era you write about? Including sayings they used, etc? It would seem that the library could only provide so much info but you still have the way they talked, etc. How much time do you spend in research only for your books? I love history and it fascinates me the info authors can come up with in historical novels.
Great question, Vicki! I rely on primary source documents whenever I can–actually firsthand accounts from the time–to get a feel for the laws and attitudes of the era. There are reference books that list some of the curses and expressions. But I must use a lot of care, because if the language were completely authentic, most of my characters would be speaking French! I spent a lot of time at first doing research on the Middle Ages, but I carry most of it around in my head now, so I can get by with researching more specific topics and events for my current books.
I know you love Scotland as it is featured so much in your writing. How many times have you actually visited? If I visited what is the site or location I absolutely must see?
Yes, Diana, I love Scotland, and I hope you get to visit! It’s so difficult to pick a single place. For history, Edinburgh is amazing. For stunning landscapes, Glencoe is breathtaking. The Lowlands have lush woodlands. My husband’s favorite city, Stirling, is a great place to stay, because not only is it full of history and gorgeous scenery, but everything else is accessible from there.
