Are Highland heroes popular?
By B.J. Scott
Look at the number of Highlander books being written and the sales numbers. You will have your answer. Romance readers are drawn to the romance genre because they are looking for a way to escape the stress and frustration of their everyday life. They long to be swept away to a magical place by a fearless, swoon-worthy, dashing, and often brooding hero, a man who while bound by duty and honor is willing to risk all for the woman he loves. Even if it is just for a few hours. The fact that many of the Highland books and movies are set in a beautiful, untamed country like Scotland appeals to the readers’ sense of adventure and curiosity about a country steeped in tradition, superstition and history. The fact that many of those living in North America today can trace their ancestry to the immigrants from Scotland does a lot to boost the popularity and interest in a land that has seen more than its share of adversity and even the powerful Roman army could not conquer.
You can’t go wrong with a Highland hero. Be it in movies or books, this holds true for any genre, but Highlanders are very popular in historical romance. If you ask a person to name a Scottish hero, most will say William Wallace or Rob Roy, historical figures made popular the movies. Some will say Duncan MacLeod of the Highlander TV series. There is something sexy and appealing about a tall, dark and handsome man in a kilt. A hero with a highland burr in his voice and wielding a claymore. There is a fascination for a brawny, spirited warrior who pushes the boundaries and can’t be tamed. Well at least not until he meets the right woman.
Visually we have been treated to a glimpse of the perfect Highland hero. Actors like Mel Gibson (Braveheart) Liam Neesom (Rob Roy) Sean Connery (assorted movies), Adrian Paul (Highlander TV and movies) and cover models like Jimmy Thomas have left a lasting imprint on our minds.
Close your eyes and imagine a Highlander charging toward you on a powerful warhorse, his hair flying in the breeze, muscles bunching and flexing as he controls the beast with rein and will. You can’t help but go weak in the knees.
Now about the book…
Blurb for Highland Homecoming
The last thing Alasdair Fraser expects to find on an isolated beach in Northern Scotland is a beautiful, unconscious lass. Unable to turn his back on someone in need, he delays his journey and tends to her injuries–an act that has him questioning his destiny and his plans to rejoin the fight for Scotland’s independence.
Will he drop the shield that guards his heart or will the secrets she fails to reveal and his own stubbornness keep them apart forever?
MY REVIEW
Once again B.J. Scott delivers a fantastic, brilliantly woven Highland tale!
Chalk full of turmoil, sizzling chemistry, romance, and a hard won happily-ever-after, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
This was one romance where I adored the charismatic hero and unconventional heroine equally, faults and all. In fact, their flaws added a wonderful realistic dimension to the story.
Historical and Highlander fans alike must read this wonderfully written, highly satisfying story.
I was provided a copy of this book for an honest review.
Five roses for Highland Homecoming.
HIGHLAND HOMECOMING EXCERPT
Perched on a stool by the fire, he watched her sleep, wondering how he was going to ever let her go. She was by far the loveliest woman he had ever seen, and she did not seem to be put off by his size, awkwardness, or lack of manners. But duty dictated that they part ways.
After tossing a log on the fire, he spread a pelt on the floor in front of the hearth, then lowered himself to the ground. He pulled the tunic over his head and tossed it on the stool, then did the same with his trews and boots, before settling beneath a length of plaid.
The last thing he wanted to do was lie on the floor and go to sleep. If truth be known, he wanted to slip beneath the covers, take Lauren in his arms, and make her his own. But that would not be right or proper. They were not betrothed and despite what people might think of him, he was a man of honor.
The women he’d bedded in the past had all been of questionable repute and none had been untried maidens. If Lauren was not already married or spoken for, he held enough respect for her that he would wait until their wedding night. But then again, if she did not get her memory back, he might never know for certain.
He slammed his fist on the floor. What the hell was he thinking? He was never going to take a bride. Especially one with no past. He was a warrior. There was no future for them, something he best not forget. He tucked the plaid around his shoulders and dozed off.
An ear-piercing scream disturbed his slumber and Alasdair jolted up with a start. Wasting no time, he climbed to his feet and raced to the pallet.

In reality, they share their century-old home in a small Canadian town on the shore of Lake Erie with three dogs and a cat. When she is not working at her childcare job, on her small business, or writing, you will find her reading, camping, or antique hunting.
