So what exactly is a signet ring? Well, originally it was a ring with initials, a symbol, or seal (often the family crest or something unique to the bearers title) worn by a man. Simply put, it was an authoritative symbol and was associated with power. The bearer of a ring carried the power of the person to whom the ring belonged.
The Regency Redingote has a fabulous post about Regency signet rings if you want to do a little further
reading.
One common use of the rings was used to seal documents. Wax was applied to the folded document or envelope, then the ring was pressed into the wax. If the seal was broken, then questions could be raised as to the authenticity of the document. Had it been tampered with or was it forged.
In The Earl’s Enticement, Roark’s failure to wear
his signet ring has Adaira assuming he’s not a titled lord, and she imprisons him in the dungeon of her family keep.
