I eagerly look forward to this weekly blog hop. It’s wonderful to take a peek into the lives of other authors. If you popped over from the incredible witty and talents Jo Richardson, you’re on the right track.
Let’s get right to today’s questions, shall we?
1. Do you prefer to write futuristic, contemporary or historical romances and why?
Right now, I write Regency-Scottish historicals (mainly early 1800s) but I also have a slightly futuristic (2025) I’ve just begun to write.
Historicals are entertaining and informative, and happen to be the genre I absolutely love to read the most. I think that’s because to dive into a historical is a journey back in time. Though the writing is historically accurate (At least I hope it is!) I can never really experience any of what I write about. That makes a bit more magical for me.
Just try to picture me riding sidesaddle, dancing a waltz at Almack’s, or riding a horse, neck or nothing, across the moors. Hey, I hear you laughing.
I suppose I’m writing the futuristic one for the same reason. The story isn’t likely to be something I’ll ever really experience, but my imagination can go wild.
2. What is your favorite time in history and how and why does it inspire you?
Regency is my absolute favorite time in history.
Kilt Curiosity. You know what they say about what a Scot wears beneath his kilt. |
Though relatively short on the history timeline, the era was such a time of social, political, and cultural change. It was also a time of extreme double standards. What one was supposed to do, and what really went on behind the scenes were in direct conflict with one another.
I also think it was a terribly romantic period, though the Georgian and Victorian eras are reminiscent of romance to me as well. Okay, so are any periods with men in kilts or armor.
Yeah, call me fickle.
3. How has your life experience contributed to your writing?
Wicked grin on my face right now because one of the greatest things about being a writer is you can do all manner of things to people who tick you off by making them characters in your books. Yes, I’ve done it.
Evil chuckle here.
Kiki-I still have this picture on my refrigerator. I miss her everyday. |
In The Earl’s Enticement, which releases May 28th, I have a dachshund puppy named Kiki. I wrote her into the story after suddenly losing my dachshund named Kiki, when she was poisoned by a Waggin’ Train Chicken Jerky Treat.
I also have a fire in that story because a few years ago, I lost three family members in two separate house fires, one known to be set by an arsonist and the other suspected to have been. I have a maid named Clara in that story who has deformed hands. She is symbolic of my great grandmother (Yes, her name was Clara) who had deformed hands.
In my first two books, Highlander’s Hope and The Viscount’s Vow, the heroines are cousins. Though neither Yvette nor Vangie are modeled after my cousin or me, except for our coloring, my cousin, Kathy, was my very best friend. She died in 2002 from brain cancer.
Puri Daj (grandmother) in The Viscount’s Vow was modeled after my grandmother, one of the fire victims.
I don’t doubt I’ll continue to include little bits of life experiences in my books.
That’s all from me today. Let’s tootle over to the extraordinary Sarah Hegger’s blog and see what time period is her favorite.
Wishing you many blessings until next week…
