ROMANCE WEEKLY-AM I LIKE MY CHARACTERS? | COLLETTE CAMERON

Dear readers, I hope you’re enjoying this weekly blog hop as much as I am. And, I hope you’re enjoying getting to know me and these other amazing romance writers just a bit more!
These titillating questions are from Debbie (Kate) Robbins.

1. How much of yourself do you write into your characters? Or do you write characters completely opposite to you?

I try not to write myself into my characters, though I’ve been told over and over again by people that know me, they can “hear” me saying things my heroines say.

Adaira Ferguson from my May 28th release is as different from me as you can get. I deliberately tried to think of how I’d respond, and then had her do the opposite. I was so sure no one would hear me  in The Earl’s Enticement. I thought I’d succeeded until a reviewer emailed me she could hear me saying something Roark muttered.

So, now it seems my heroes sound like me.

2. Has your writing helped you see events in your own life clearer?

Hmm, I’m not sure about this question.

I’ve included a few events that have occurred in my life in my books, or at least diluted versions of those events. But, I don’t think my writing has clarified them in any way.
3. Have you written a character with more of your personal characteristics than any other? What are they?

Perhaps not anyone character with more of my personal characteristics, but I do have them disliking food and other things I don’t like. And the reverse is true too. I have both male and female characters liking and enjoying things that I do as well.
For instance, most are dog lovers, and I adore dogs.

Still, I’ve tried to keep “me” out of my books. I don’t ride horses, but all of my heroines do; at least so far. Two of them are strong swimmers; I’m not. I will confess that when Adaira says, “Trout tastes of weeds and dirt,” I’ve said that exact same thing to my hubby.

I guess, try as we might, no author can truly form a character without their own personal values, likes, dislikes, and passions filtering through to some small degree.

Does it make you wonder how much of the author is present in the characters of the latest book you’ve read?

Let’s see what Katherine Givens has to say this week, shall we?
