Five-Line Friday RULES
- Five lines of your current work in progress, new release, soon-to-be-released … whatever. (Do keep it as close to five sentences as you can.)
- You are welcome to post buy links too.
- PG (I don’t have a warning on my blog about content, so it has to be appropriate for all viewers. I will delete comments that aren’t appropriate or offensive to some audiences. Sorry.)
My snippet is from Virtue and Valor which released last Tuesday.
Maura patted the purple and white coverlet into place then adjusted a couple of pillows to her satisfaction. “A curse is a curse—like those Callanish sinners turned to stone for their heathen activities on the Sabbath.”
“Maura, that’s Superstitious drivel. The Callanish Circle was used to track lunar activity.”
Clearly baffled, Maura pursed her lips and squinted at Isobel. “Loony activity?”
“Lunar. The path of the moon.” Isobel smiled, pointing with a forefinger and drawing an arc in the air.
“The sinner’s-to-stone business is nonsense. Simply a silly legend spread by the early Kirk of Scotland to discourage rites they didn’t approve of.”
I’m looking forward to your five lines this week!
Thanks so much for this opportunity, Collette!
“I know what he hired you for, but I’m telling you, you’re fired.” As she stalked across the pub, many pairs of eyes stared at her, some wide in question, some narrowed. Who cared? She hadn’t done anything wrong.
“That’s not your call, sweetheart,” he said.
~~~~~ CHASING GOLD http://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Beyond-Fairytales-Alexa-Bourne-ebook/dp/B00SF28Q0G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435343666&sr=8-1&keywords=Chasing+Gold%2C+alexa+bourne
Alexa, this sounds wonderful! (The heroine in my current WIP is names Alexa too.)
Alexa, I enjoyed Chasing Gold very much. 🙂
Love it Collette, especially the “Lunar” part, which fits nicely with my snippet.
Here’s a few lines from my new novel releasing July 1st (Up now for Pre-order) entitled Pirates of the Dark Nebula a Science Fiction romance:
“Doctor Callista, you have to do exactly as I say.”
He knew who she was.
Helpless in his grasp, she could only nod as her heart thumped hard against her chest.
He released her wrist, but kept his hand across her mouth. “Holster your blaster.”
Oh, now that’s just too much of a tease, Steve!
I love that “holster your blaster” line. :~))
Love your snippet, Collette, and thank you for the opportunity to post. This is from Lady Beresford’s Lover, which will release on July 21st!!
They had been strolling in the general direction of Berkeley Square when Robert stopped walking and faced Rupert. “At some point, there will be a lady whom you cannot ignore. She will dominate every waking thought and haunt your dreams. You’ll want to fight every man who asks her to dance or accompanies her during the Grand Strut.”
“You make it sound like an obsession.”
Thanks, Ella! I’ve been waiting for this one!!
LOL, Ella. Something tells me Rupert is in for a painful time (but with a perfect HEA). 🙂
Work currently in progress, to be released in November.
“You feel this connection just as I do. It’s bigger than both of us.”
“No,” she shook her head, refusing to look at him. “We come from two different worlds. I could never fit into yours. You are the new baron and I am the witch in the woods. No.”
She pushed harder and he let her slip reluctantly out of his arms.
SNOWBOUND FAIRY CHRISTMAS
A perfect holiday snippet, Brenda!
Yay — a Christmas fairy tale!
Ooh, stone circles! Can’t help but love them. Hmm… I’ve been advertising the lighthearted aspects of my upcoming release, To Kiss a Rake. Today I’ll post a few more somber lines instead. 🙂
After a while Miles said, “We’d better cook up a story to tell your family.”
She had been gazing out the window, but at this she turned. “It’s only my grandmother, and no story will satisfy her.” He caught her shiver in the darkness. “She will never forgive me.”
“Surely it’s not that bad,” he said, trying not to laugh at this dramatic statement.
“Oh, yes,” Melinda said. “It will probably be worse. Fortunately, she can’t beat me anymore.”
Nice snippet, Barbara. Must he a lot going on here!
I do not like Grandmother!
Great excerpts, as always! Here is another snippet from A PERFECTLY UNREGIMENTED CHRISTMAS, from Christmas Revels II, which will be out in October.
“Is there anything else you cannot abide, my lord?” If this woman was someone’s poor relation he’d eat the damned dead rat. She spoke like a duchess and moved like a courtesan. Fortunately, he’d not stood up when she entered the room. Good manners didn’t wash when accompanied by a cockstand, unless English decorum had changed a great deal in the three or so years he’d been away.
Ben turned his bleary gaze on the tatty accumulation of fur, claws, and nasty disposition she called a cat.
“You will have to negotiate with Atilla, my lord. He has been in residence here far longer than either of us.”
“I do not negotiate with cats.”
“It’s just as well.” She picked up the ledgers and stepped over the carnage of the dropped supper tray. “Atilla doesn’t negotiate.”
The cat in question ripped the head off the dead rat and began to devour it. The governess had the audacity to smile.
“And as you cannot abide timid maids, you will have to clean up the remains of your supper yourself.”
The tempting aroma of roast beef, boiled potatoes and eel pie wafted up from the smashed plates on the well-worn Persian carpet at his feet.
“And my supper, Miss Winters?”
She glanced at his ruined meal. “Is getting cold. Good night, my lord.” She swept from his study in a shush of grey silk skirts and the scent of gardenias and lemons, punctuated by a none-too-subtle slam of the door.
Utterly delightful!
Thanks, Collette. Here are five lines from my WIP, “The Weeping Dragon” (medieval fantasy romance).
The trees were clad in their autumn finery, the last burst of color before the winter winds turned the landscape all brown and gray. There were no flowers for her to pick, but many a bush and bough hung heavy with fruit.
Dorrit gathered some rowans and sat down by a clear spring to eat them. Ordinarily she would be entranced by the beauty of her surroundings. But today they were lost on her.
Feedback welcome. Good luck, everyone.
Mary Anne, this sounds so fascinating!
Thanks, Collette.
I love these excerpts! Here’s a bit from Dangerous Weakness, due out in September.
A slight smile played on his brother-in-law’s mouth. “Your wife, Richard? And from appearances in an interesting condition.”
“As good as, Andrew, and don’t say differently. She’s about to birth that baby any day now. I need to get her out of here.”
Will looked over Richard’s shoulder. “Our host looks impatient. Let’s get this over with.” The three men turned back to Hamidou. “Nice suit, by the way,” Will put in, looking at Richard’s tattered robe.
This is so in intriguing.
