This is one of those novels that leaves you smiling and hugging your book when it’s over, not ready to admit you’ve reached the end yet completely satisfied. ~Pure Jonel

The first sentence of SCHEMES GONE AMISS made me giggle, and from then on I was completely under Collette Cameron’s spell. ~Buried Under Romance

Intrepid and outspoken, Blythe Culpepper is dragged against her will to London for a Season. To her dismay, her guardian enlists the devilishly attractive Lord Leventhorpe, the one man she detests, to assist with her Come Out. Since their first encounter, hostile looks and cutting retorts have abounded whenever they meet, yet she cannot deny the way her body reacts when he’s near. So perhaps it’s no surprise that upon overhearing another woman scheming to entrap Tristan into marriage, Blythe risks all to warn him.

Haunted by childhood trauma, Tristan, the austere and controlled Marquis of Leventhorpe, usually avoids social gatherings. So why, against his better judgement, does he agree to aid his closet friend in presenting the Culpeppers to the ton? Might it be because one Culpepper stirs more than his interest? Blythe taxes him to his limits with her sharp wit and even sharper tongue. Yet, he cannot deny the beauty fascinates him. However, when an old enemy comes calling, using Blythe to settle old scores, Tristan must decide if protecting his honor is more important than winning the heart of the woman he has come to love.

EXCERPT

He hadn’t expected Blythe to be thrilled about the notion. Given the furious glint in her eye, she wouldn’t concede easily. In fact, he hadn’t intended to tell her about the duel until after the deed was done. That had seemed bloody brilliant when he’d first contemplated it. If Phillips bested him, she’d be married and widowed in under twenty-four hours, and she needed to know that Tristan had legally provided for her.

“You cannot meet that swine.” Her chest rose and fell rapidly with her agitation. “He’s a cur and a cheat. He’ll not fight nobly, and you must know that to be true.”

“It’s a matter of my honor, Blythe.” Mere moments ago, happiness and something akin to adoration had shone in her eyes. Betrayal shadowed her exquisite features now. He touched her arm. “A man is nothing if he does not keep his word. My honor is paramount to me.”

Pursing her pretty mouth, she brushed a curl from her forehead. “According to Brooke, Phillips is gravely ill from the wound I inflicted. He won’t be able to meet you. I’m surprised you didn’t know that.”

He did, yet didn’t believe a word. Phillips was a bloody coward and would use any excuse to waylay the inevitable confrontation. In fact, at Tristan’s behest, Drake and Whitehouse watched Phillips’s residence, lest he try to sneak away. Again.

“I shall wait until he is recovered if I must. However, meet him I shall.” Phillips couldn’t be permitted to live and despoil more innocents. And if Miss Sanford had the right of it, he might be guilty of more appalling crimes. “He’s escaped justice far too many times. He must be held accountable.”

She closed her eyes, her lips trembling. Her lashes slowly lifted, and his heart turned to stone at the resignation and defeat in her eyes. “Then I regret, my lord, that I must decline your offer of marriage. I’ll not be married and widowed within a day’s time.”

“Be sensible. Your reputation is in tatters. I offer you my name and security.” He reached for her, and she fled behind the desk.

Shrugging, she placed the porcelain inkwell upon its matching tray. “I hadn’t intended to marry well. I’ll retire to the country.”

Blythe’s reputation is in tatters, and if she refused to marry Tristan, she is essentially a ruined woman.
