Mini-Muse Monday-Romantic Rendezvous
I’d like to discuss romantic rendezvous today. What are the best settings for romances and what makes them so appealing?
Some of my favorite settings are Scotland (think Highlands and castles!) Regency England, and France for historicals of all time periods. There some inherently romantic in those locations, perhaps because of the customs and traditions.
Throw in a noble or two or three, and I’m captivated. Yes, I know. I’m shallow.
I love tropical sunny and sandy destinations for contemporaries too. Perhaps it’s because I live in a cooler, damper environment, but when I think of a romantic get-away, it’s always to someplace warm.
I’m not keen on hospital or office settings, but do enjoy gardens, ballrooms, and ships. Nothing says sexy like a pirate!
Still I’ve read books set in locations around the world and in time periods just as diverse, but I tend to gravitate back to my favorites.
What is your ultimate romance novel setting and which ones don’t you like? Why?
love Scotland , not to stuck if they take place in a country i am not familiar with ,Russia, or china
I’ve read a few historicals that take place in Russia, but none in China.
I freely admit I’m not into contemporaries much. I’m an historical romance junkie, especially in a British Isle or pirate setting. But I’ve also enjoyed historical western too. I’m not sure why I prefer historicals, but it may partially be because I’m a history buff and it was my minor in college.
That’s how I am too, Janice. I’ve read some really good contemporaries, but they don’t feel as much like an escape to me. I love history and peeking into the lives of those who lived long ago, even if it is fictitious.
I love historical novels and I can’t think of a place in the world that hasn’t been the setting for a novel that I’ve read. Quite a few China, Russia, the usual suspects (Italy, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, South America, Australia, India, Egypt, Israel, hmm, maybe Denmark? Can’t think of one set in Denmark.
I even wrote one set in Poland.
Thanks, Collette.

I’ve enjoyed some colonial American and Native American ones too.
Regency England, Highlands of Scotland for historical romances; for contemporary romances: parties or unexpected meeting or bumping into someone
Denise
I also mostly read historicals, but I do have a few favorite authors who write contemporary, and I read some contemporary romantic suspense or mysteries. For those, I prefer either a very unusual setting or some other element that’s not overdone. For historicals, I read more books set in Regency England than any other one setting, but I enjoy lots of other settings, the more exotic the better. I loved the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters (Barbara Mertz). I understand one more is set to come out later this year. Also read Western American Historicals, just started again after years immersed in British settings. Westerns were my favorites when I was growing up.
